Deadpool 2

Deadpool 2, still irreverent, iconoclastic, as far as sequels go, it's not the usual milk the franchise effort. There were jibs, there were jabs, as well as a smattering of action, mostly towards the earlier part of the first half of the movie.

But it is still far from perfect, especially when compared to the first movie which had more whimsy, more meaty narrative and plot of substance. Marvel seems to have gone soggy sandwich syndrome when it comes to some jokes and especially when it comes to character grit and attitude reversal - almost like whatever trials and tribulations that usually, irrevocably, alters a persona is magically nullified transforming a stoic and battle hardened demeanor and to an amicable ally.

But Deadpool being Deadpool still punches leagues above the weak showing of Thor Ragnarok both in terms of comedy and story. It's still a decent watch for Deadpool fans and non fans alike, with the introduction of Cable, old regulars and a motley crew. Oh and the title is something of a gem and stick around for the end credit scenes.

Adobe Premiere .mov import error

Here's a quick solution for Adobe Premiere not being able to import .MOV files. I thought this was just an inherent shortcoming in Premiere because I did have this problem previously, but then completely forgotten about it. It wasn't until I reformatted my machine, reinstalled everything that it came back again. Fortunately, I'd just just recently shot and edited footage from my camera which ONLY has mov files which was then I realised that something it might be coded related. Check out the video to find the solution.

MSI Gaming Mouse DS100 Interceptor Unboxing

MSI's DS100 Interceptor is a relatively inexpensive entry level laser gaming mouse. Boasting a sleek minimalist silhouette with "Advanced anti-slip coating" on its surface, the mouse comes with:

  • 7 programmable buttons
  • Multi color-lighting
  • Ambidextrous Shape
  • Gold-plated usb connecter
  • Braided wire cable
  • 4 step adjustment buttons
  • 5 gaming profiles via the software (adjustable using the profile mode switch underneath the mouse)

Generic Use

The software is fairly intuitive however the tracking seems to be somewhat finicky, but currently after several tweaks and experimentation seems to offer a fairly accurate and responsive feedback. I'm assuming that gaming mice tend to be not as instantly ready to go as other consumer level devices.
Although I use it on a wooden desktop, I didn't assume the tracking should be such an issue without a mouse mat. But I will assess it after getting a good quality mouse mat.

Another hitch was the scroll wheel's rubber covering separated from the wheel after roughly 4-5 months of normal use. Luckily a drop or two of super glue underneath it completely fixed the issue - however it should not have happened at all.

The farther thumb switch on the left hand side is not easily reachable unless if you adapt a more 'mouse in palm' style grip i.e. the whole hand is resting on top of the mouse. I'll have further updates after a fair amount of gaming, so stayed tuned.

How to make custom YouTube thumbnails - Quick and Easy

So I fumbled with one key tenets of YouTube videos, amongst every other thing. That is the first impression you might make, or might not - the humble thumbnail.

It's usually what grabs a viewer's attention, almost always more than the title of the video.

For this I thought I'd take an existing video 'How to fix microphone not being picked up on Windows 10' that I have which has an auto generated thumbnail.

The basic setup is as follows, (I use Photoshop, it can easily be set in any other image editing software, see link below for .PSD file):
Width: 1920 px
Height: 1080 px
Resolution: 150 pixels/inch
The Width x Height will automatically take care of the proportions of the image. And the resolution is roughly double 72 pixels/inch - which is generically what images are set to for web based formatting, i.e. online display etcetera. I found this made the text and image assets very small when used as a thumbnail, almost to the point it defeated the purpose of a custom thumbnail to begin with.

Setting resolution at 150 pixels (which is half the industry requirement for anything that is to be printed 300 dpi, roughly translated) ensures that the graphics and text would be of a sufficiently large enough size and quality. You are more than free to go higher than 150, but definitely not smaller though.

Photoshop Template File

Once you've settled on the text, image and layout:

  • Save the PSD
  • Flatten all the layers
  • Save as Jpeg or PNG

That's all there's to it, now you can upload it as a thumbnail for your YouTube video. Here is the new thumbnail I created:

And this is how it looked previously using a thumbnail that was auto generated, which tends to get lost in most settings where it would show up:

So now it will have more of a presence amongst all the other videos. Happy hunting.

YouTube Keyboard shortcuts

It's often easier to use keyboard shortcuts then navigating to and through menus and clicks. Most programs have handy little shortcuts to expedite processes, most of which can be configured. Websites have these too although most aren't evident until you accidentally hit upon it or the site points it outright.
Here are a list of YouTube keyboard shortcuts which will lessen the amount of clicking and mousing; some are only accessible through the shortcut keys:

Reguar Shortcuts (only works when focus is on the video)

Space - Pause/resume video
Left/Right Arrow/- Rewind or forward in 5 second increments
Up/Down Arrow - increase or decrease volume

Other Shortcuts (works regardless where the focus is)

J/L - Rewind or forward in 10 second increments

K - Pause/resume video
,   - Step backward (while paused, comma)
.   - Step forward (while paused, period)

Shift + . - Increase video speed
Shift + , - Decrease video speed

M - Mute or unmute audio
F  - Toggle fullscreen on/off
C -  Toggle captions on/off
/  - Activate search bar

Hauppauge HD PVR60 - Video Game Capture device

Got a good deal on a Hauppauge HD PVR60; so I HAD to buy it.
Here are a quick run down of the device's features:
  • H.264 HD video encoding
  • No lag HDMI passthrough (HDMI in/out)
  • Frame rates:
    • 1080p at 60/30 fps
    • 720p at 60/30 fps
    • 576p at 60/30 fps
    • 480p at 60/30 fps
  • Stream to Twitch or Youtube (StreamEez)
  • Record past gameplay (SkipBack)
  • Facecam to put yourself into the action (So to speak type)
  • Powered by USB 2.0

It does require input from a non HDCP(digital copy protection) devices and does require the device to be plugged into a PC to capture. But the Hauppauge handles all the heavy lifting so the PC can happily churn away even if the specs aren't super high. One exception being Facecam will require an i5 processor or higher.

So far the unboxing is all I managed. Hoping to hook it up and test it out shortly. Stay tuned.

How to setup Modernizr.js

What to do when you need to ensure that really cool feature that you are using on your site will work on almost every browser, or on the off chance it doesn't, adapt and provide an alternative functionality that gracefully degrades?

Previously that would have involved numerous ad hoc checks and tricks to make sure that the rendering browser was capable or not. This wasn't always consistent and needed either JavaScript or CSS workarounds.

Modernizr.js is the silver-coated bullet that enables a simple and centralized way to ensure whether features are supported by a browser, with a myriad of checks, and enable you to build contingencies to accommodate.

This video shows a simple way to setup Modernizr.js on a webpage with just a simple check for the Canvas API. For more detailed information and methods to check and readdress browser shortcomings check out the Modernizr docs.

Scope in JavaScript

A video explanation of what scope is in JavaScript. For more information check out the writeup here - Scope in JavaScript.

This was the first time using Camtasia Studio Ver. 7 and have to say not overly impressed with the output quality. If you try to output at 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) it crashes on the export feature with an out of memory dialog. So you are forced to render at 1280 x 720 (HD). Until I figured out to force it do it through the custom settings. A bit sharper however you're limited .avi and sound comes out garbled which required more tweaking.
The only good thing is capturing, editing and sprucing up the video can all be done in the same software. Very useful for displaying keyboard shortcuts but haven't had much time to try out other features. The audio came out exceptionally low which is something i'll have to take into account the next time around.
